PE & School Sports Grant Funding   2013-2018

Since September 2013 the Government has provided some additional funding for the next two academic years to improve the provision of physical education (PE) in primary schools.

At Peaslake Free School Rupert Thorne from “Kids @ Sport” plans and teaches sport in weekly PE sessions across the school.  During the lessons the children take part in a wide range of sporting activities learning the skills they need before playing a game.  The children’s enjoyment of sport is seen on their faces as they experiment and try out new manoeuvres but there are many more benefits to investing in these activities as we watch the children grow in confidence, become part of a team – supporting and encouraging each other.  Their spatial awareness, co-ordination, motor skills, strength and fitness are all much improved.

Rupert also runs a lunchtime football club for all our football enthusiasts on Thursdays, the children really enjoy these sessions and always remember that Thursday is a “Rupert” day!  These sessions have encouraged the children to play as a team and think and work together as well as increasing stamina, they are out in all weather, and fitness.

In addition to this the children have started to visit the Dance A Ramix Dance studio where Avril Mumford teaches dance and music and movement. The benefits to the children, apart from the excitement of being in a mirrored studio, are numerous as they learn to respond to different types of music, controlling how their bodies move while developing their core strength as well as improving their posture, balance and co-ordination.

The school children have also taken part in a number of extra-curricular sporting activities including:

  • The Hurtwood Hike
  • Sports Relief Mile
  • Mini Olympic sessions at Glebelands
  • Pancake racing
  • Fundraising Walk for Walking With the Wounded.
  • Football tournament at Longacre School
